A Little History of Slovenia….

As you may know, Slovenia used to be a state of the country of Yugoslavia. The break up of Yugoslavia in 1991 also gave independence to Slovenia officially declaring itself the Republic of Slovenia. The process for independence wasn’t easy and didn’t happen in an instance. The year prior to their independence, in 1990, Slovenia, still under Yugoslavia, held a direct vote of the electorate called the Plebiscite to declare independence. On December 26, 1990, the votes were in and the results accounted for over 90% of the people who were eligible to vote. The high majority of over 80% of the people voted for Slovenia to form an independent state. In the summer of 1991, the President of Slovenia, Milan Kucan, officially declared its independence.

The Government of Slovenia provides a great overview of Slovenia’s Independence.
